The circus seemingly just appears in a clearing outside of town. No evidence of how it arrived, it’s just there. It’s not like any circus you have ever seen before. It is all black and white, not just a big top, but many tents with winding paths between and around them and it’s surrounded by a black iron fence. Le Cirque des Rêves opens at night fall and closes at dawn. The circus is the venue for a fierce competition between two young illusionists Celia and Marco who have been bound by their masters to each other and a “game” for which neither knows the rules or the expected outcome. There’s love, mystery, illusion, and intrigue in this imaginative tale. One of the best books I have read this year!

The latest Irene Kelly novel is a sequel to the Edgar Award Winner Bones. I have read all the Irene Kelly novels and loved them very much. I was first attracted to Jan Burke, seeing the cover of Bones in a book store. I picked it up read the back and was hooked. After reading that one, I had to find them all. This most recent story, introduces the return of psychopathic serial killer Nicholas Parrish, who almost cost Irene her life in Bones. I have been looking forward to a new Irene Kelly novel for a few years and was not disappointed. Thrilling Read!

This story continues the story of Agent Pendergast attempting to unravel the conspiracy which took the life of his wife Helen. As always, the story is thrilling and easy to read, not high literature, but definitely an enjoyable read. Warning the book leaves you on a cliffhanger which will be continued in the next Pendergast novel.

Remainder (Paperback)

$15.95
ISBN-13: 9780307278357

Published: Vintage, 2/2007
The back cover tells us: “A man is severely injured in a mysterious accident, receives an outrageous sum in legal compensation, and has no idea what to do with it. Then, one night, an ordinary sight sets off a series of bizarre visions he can’t quite place. How he goes about bringing his visions to life--and what happens afterward--makes for one of the most riveting, complex, and unusual novels in recent memory. Remainder is about the secret world each of us harbors within, and what might happen if we were granted the power to make it real.”

“An assured work of existential horror...Perfectly disturbing.” Kirkus Reviews

“Strangely gripping...Remainder should be read (and, of course, reread) for its intelligence and humour.” The Times Literary Supplement (London)

I enjoyed this novel. The writing is compelling, the descriptions evocative, and there is an incredible level of detail. I felt myself drawn into our narrator’s increasingly disturbing decisions to reenact situations in which he can feel less “unreal”. The plot development and the ending leave something to be desired, but the book is well worth reading for the interesting writing style and unusual concept.

The dead appear wandering into the “City”, an unusual temporary afterlife. In the City, people create new lives for themselves. The Dead’s time in the City ceases when the last person on earth who remembers them dies. Meanwhile on earth, a deadly virus is spreading, effectively cutting off Laura Byrd at her crippled Antarctica research station. While forced to cross the frozen tundra, Laura’s memories sustain many of the Dead in the City. The book meditates on the power of memory, resilience and on the intricacies of relationships. Loved it!!!

Folly (Paperback)

I love all of Laurie King’s books. Both series, the Kate Martinelli San Francisco homicide detective series and the Mary Russell apprentice to Sherlock Holmes series are both fantastic, but my favorite Laurie King book is Folly. I found myself identifying with 52-year-old Rae. The story grabbed me in both the physical and emotional arenas. Rae is an accomplished carpenter creating inlaid furniture, so artistic it is sold in museums and galleries, but on Folly she does all the heavy lifting to completely rebuild her uncle’s cabin from the ground up. She also has suffered from chronic depression, survived tragedies, and does not trust her emotions. Fabulous reading.

Beach Music is one of my all time favorite books and I have read everything Pat Conroy has written. His prose is beautiful and evocative. This memoir about a lifetime of reading selections helps to illustrate why his writing is so spectacular. Drawing on his mother’s recommendations, favorite teachers, libraries and book stores Mr. Conroy shares his love of the written word. These reading anecdotes provide a rich backstory to his glorious bestselling writing career.

The Sparrow, Russell’s first novel hooked me in. With the release of Doc, I wondered, “do I really want to read an entire novel about Doc Holliday?” Well the answer is a resounding YES! The story takes place during Doc’s earlier years before he and the Earp’s move to Tombstone and all the events that lead to the gunfight at the OK corral. Ms. Russell fleshes out the historical detail with exceedingly well drawn characters. This is one of those books where I find myself sad when I finish, because I won’t be spending time with all of these interesting characters every day.
